From expectation to direction

(1) jeg fokuserer på det, jeg vil opnå, og derved ser jeg ikke den udvikling, der faktisk sker lige nu;

  • Hvad forventer du af dine nærmeste (vælg to tætte mennesker)?

What do you expect from yourself?

Recently a wise and sensitive man asked me what expectations I had put on myself. He added that, if I wanted to walk my path more freely, I needed to free myself out from the expectations I have for myself and those I think others have for me.

Reflecting upon those, I immediately thought of my business. Almost every day I am thinking about when I should take time to work on my marketing, blog, new business avenues etc., wanting to stay “efficient” and maximize my working hours throughout the week. In principle, you can always do more (and the earlier researcher in me knows that too well) to grow and improve your work. Coming from a family of successful entrepreneurs I have came to confuse “big thinking” and ambitions with expectations and achievements.

No doubt that I want HeartWise to grow, and thereby help more and more people to grow and realize their highest potential. Yet, if I only focus on goals of growth, two main issues arise:

(1) By focusing extensively on development, I stay oriented towards the future and neglect the present moment and the current unfolding of things.

(2) I want to be productive and efficient, and thereby I tend to push my edges too far and forget the value of “empty space” between sessions or classes, where I have the opportunity to resource myself and take a step back to witness the current organic development of HeartWise – and myself.

Spanda: expansion needs contraction

Breaks give us the opportunity to contemplate and integrate the development that just happened. Breaks are the counterbalance of our responsible engagement and dedicated efforts towards what is truly important to us. Try to take short “unproductive” and goalless breaks throughout your day or your week. Remember, that pauses are just part of your dance with the universe and that everything is “spanda:” a pulsation between expansion and contraction, up and down.

Short exercise – release expectations and clarify your direction

I invite you to a short reflection, taking you though a writing exercise to answer the following questions…

  • What do you expect from the people close to you (pick two)? How can you start give yourself that?
  • Whose expectations are you polarized still around? Whose expectations are you trying to fulfill?
  • What do you expect from yourself? What is the essence behind these: what needs are they supposed to meet, and what do they reflect about what is truly important to you?
  • Use answers from the last point to clarify your life direction, your mission. Let that guide your action rather than (self-imposed) expectations.
